Most beginners buy a driver first. That is backwards. The putter is the disc you will throw more than any other, it is the cheapest way to learn clean form, and it is the disc that decides your score. A beginner who learns to putt with a straight, low-speed disc improves faster than one who spends the season fighting an overstable driver.
What makes a good beginner putter
Three things matter: a low speed rating, a straight flight with very little fade, and a plastic that grips the chains instead of skipping off them.
- Speed 2-3. Slow discs expose bad form, which is the point. They also fly straight without requiring a powerful throw.
- Neutral to slightly understable. You want the disc to hold the line you put on it. A putter that hooks hard left hides mistakes instead of teaching you.
- Baseline or medium plastic for putting, premium for throwing. Baseline plastic is grippier in the rain and grabs chains. Premium plastic lasts years but is slicker and skips more.
Putter molds worth starting with
Kastaplast Berg. The Berg is the cult classic of approach discs. It has almost no glide, so it drops where it lands and refuses to sail past the basket. If your problem is overshooting the green, this is the fix. We carry it in K1 and K3 plastic.
Kastaplast Reko. A straight, beadless putter that works equally well as a driving putter. The Reko is the disc most Kastaplast throwers keep two of: one for putting, one for tee shots on short holes.
Discraft Zone. A flat, overstable approach disc. It will not turn over, it fights wind, and it is the disc to reach for on forehand approaches. Most players pair a Zone with a straight putter.
Innova Aviar. The most thrown putter in the sport for a reason. Neutral, comfortable in almost any hand, and available in every plastic.
MVP Envy. A slightly overstable putter that doubles as a midrange. Overmold rim, very straight on a flat release, and it holds up in wind better than most putters.
Putting putter vs throwing putter
Serious players bag two. The putting putter is baseline plastic in a mold they own three identical copies of, so practice transfers to the course. The throwing putter is premium plastic and more overstable, used off the tee and for approaches that need to skip or fight wind. If you are buying one disc today, buy the putting putter in baseline plastic and practice from 20 feet until you can hit 8 of 10.
How to practice without a basket
You do not need a course. A practice basket in the yard plus 20 minutes a day will do more for your score than any new disc. Put a marker at 15, 25 and 35 feet and move back only when you make ten in a row from the current distance.
What to buy first
One straight putter, one overstable approach disc, and one midrange. That is a complete beginner bag. Skip the distance driver until you can throw a midrange 200 feet on a straight line, because a driver only amplifies whatever your form already does.
